Remembering Yukinko in Ōno | Fukui Prefecture

Behind the seemingly simple wooden form of the Yuki Ningyō (colloquially called Yukinko) lies a layered history bringing together masters, disciples, and the local community in Ōno, Fukui Prefecture. In this conversation with local toy shop owner Ms. Yamada, who used to sell Yukinko dolls, and Buddhist priest Mr. Takizawa, we explore the origins and the stories of resilience that shaped this unique local figure.

一見すると素朴な木の姿をした「ゆきんこ」ですが、その背後には、福井県大野で長く紡がれてきた師と弟子の絆、そして地域の人々の温かなつながりが重なり合っています。今回、地元で玩具店を営み当時雪人形を販売されていた山田さんと住職の滝沢さんにお話を伺いながら、「ゆきんこ」が生まれた背景と、困難を乗り越えながら大切に受け継がれてきた物語をひも解いていきます。

ANF: This isn’t quite the same, is it?
Ms. Yamada: No, that’s right. This one was made by Hōun-san, the master who first created them. And this one was made by one of his disciples. It’s not by Mr. Kaneko either. This was done by Mr. Takizawa, a disciple who studied under Mr. Kaneko.
　 ANF（3体を見比べて）ちょっと違いますね。
　山田　はい。こちらは今申し上げた芳雲さんで、芳雲先生ですが、こちらはお弟子さんです。金子さんとも違います。芳雲さんに直々にお習いしたお弟子さんです。

A: I didn’t see his name in the archives.
Y: No, it’s not recorded. But he went to study with him until the very end of his life, and he owned this piece. He asked me what I wanted to do with it, and I said I would be honored to have it.

　ANF　記録とかではお名前載ってなかったですね。
　山田　はい、載ってないですね。だけど直にずっと亡くなるまで習いに行ってた方で、これをお持ちで、僕作ったのもあるけどどうする？って言われたらでこんなにおねがいしますって申し上げた訳で。
　ANF　お名前わかります?
　山田　はい、滝沢さんとおっしゃるんですけど彫刻でいろいろあの仏像とかを彫ってますけど。
A: And he’s still active today?
Y: Yes, that’s right.

ANF この方はまだ今もやってらっしゃるんですか？
山田そうですね。

A: Does he sell his work? Or is it more of a hobby, something he makes if people around him ask?
Y: Exactly, he makes all kinds of things. [looking at the Yukinko] Mr Takizawa always explained to me in detail: “Here, the back is angled, but I prefer it straight so it stands well.” He would say you could adapt things as you wished.

　ANF　販売はされてはないんですか? ご趣味で？その周りの方が欲しいってなったら作る感じですか？
　山田　そう、いろんなのを作られて、先生は私に一生懸命説明しなさるんや。先生は、ここ後ろ鋭角になってるけど、僕は座りのいいようにこうまっすぐして、それはどのようにでもっておっしゃったんだけど。
A: Excuse me, may I?
Y: Yes, go ahead.

　ANF　ちょっとよろしい?
　山田　はい、どうぞ
A: [Comparing the head silhouettes] So it’s thinner here? Is this the original design, like it was at the beginning?
Y: Yes, that’s Mr. Hōun’s style. There’s the first, Hōun-san, the second, his cousin Mr Kaneko, and then the disciples. Mr Takizawa really learned at Kaneko’s side.

　ANF（頭部のシルエットを比べて）ここが細いってことです？これがオリジナルで元々はこうだったと？
　山田　そうそうこれが芳雲先生の。初代、2代目、で、こちらが門下生になりますね。ご自分でずっと芳雲先生の横で習いに行ってたって。
A: This is zelkova wood, isn’t it?
Y: You have a good eye! These two are zelkova. From Kaneko’s time onward, they used a paler wood – I’m not sure exactly which. I asked the master if the dark tone came with age, but he said that was the natural color of zelkova.　

　 ANF　これは欅ですね。
　山田　ようご存じで。こちらお二方は欅です。この金子さんのときから白地?何の木でしょうこれは。だけん私先生にこれ黒くなったんですか？て聞いたら、もともとこういう色や欅って。
A: This one looks quite pale, though. Is it also zelkova? What do you think? Did your shop carry this size, Yamada-san?
Y: I think there were three sizes, the one here is the largest. There’s also a smaller one, and a very small one. I only brought a few today, but I could gather more. I know more or less where they are still in town. Mr. Takizawa also said this model should still exist.

　ANF　そうですよね。これは割と白い。でもこれは欅ですかね。どうでしょう？
おもちゃの山田さんでは、このサイズを取り扱われていたのですか？　
　山田　うーん確か3種類くらいあったよ。
　ANF　3種類くらい！これは大きいですね。
これは大きいですね。で、これが小さくて、もう一つ大きいです。箱に入るとやっぱりこれくらいだ。
今日はこれくらいしか持ってこなかったけど、まだまだ集められますけど。

(Mr Takizawa joins the conversation) （滝沢さん合流）
Takizawa: [pointing at one Yukinko] This is the work of Hōmei Kaneko. Hōun-san was the master, and he was the disciple. I am the “grandson” in that lineage.

　滝沢　これは金子芳名という人のものです。で、この人（前田芳雲）がお師匠さんで、この人がお弟子、私は孫弟子。

A: So there wasn’t any formal authorization to make them?
T: Hōun-san, the original sculptor, used to make many things, but he couldn’t make a living from it in Ōno, since there wasn’t much demand. So he came up with the idea of Yukinko, which became quite successful. But his real passion was carving Buddhist statues, so he didn’t make many of them.

　ANF　じゃあ直接許可みたいなものとかは無かったんですか？
　滝沢　前田先生が彫刻家としていろんなものを作るんですけど、大野では生活ができないんですよ。需要がないから。仏さんを作ったり、いろんな人形を作ったんだけど、たまたま何かのアイデアで雪人形を作ったら、非常に需要があったわけですね。で、本人はそれをいくつか作って、生活の生業にしてたんだけど、やはり作家としてのプライドっていうかそんなのがあって、本業では仏像とか、いろんな彫刻をしたかったんですけど、だから量的にはあまり作らなかったんですね。

A: I see.
T: Later, his cousin Mr. Kaneko, who was also a carpenter, took over the making of Yukinko dolls. I myself learned carving from him at a workshop organized by the city.

　ANF　なるほど。
　滝沢　そこで今度は金子さん自身も指物大工のような形をしてて、生活がそんなに良くないですね。だからこんなの作ったらっていうことで、それで大野町のところでこれを作ったんですね。で、それを民芸品という形で売っていくという、そんな感じではないかなと思う。私はこの先生が大野市の社会教育の中で木彫の彫刻講座を開いて、市民に教えてたんですよ。それで習いに行って。

A: Were there other students?
T: Yes, about ten of us. We learned wood carving on boards.

　ANF　じゃあ他にも生徒がいらっしゃるんですか？
　滝沢　何人かいらっしゃるんですよ。10人ほどいらっしゃって。板彫りのやつを習ったんですね。
A: At what age?
T: In my thirties, about forty years ago.

　ANF　それはおいくつぐらいの時?
　滝沢　30代。40年ほど前ですね。
A: Did you have another job?
T: Yes, it was just a hobby. All the participants were amateurs. But I became truly fascinated, and I studied Buddhist carving directly under Kaneko-san.

　ANF　その時はお仕事は別でお持ちでいらっしゃったんですか。
　滝沢　私は趣味ですから。全然違う。講座に来ていたのもみんな趣味で来てますから。でも私は趣味でやってたんですけれど、やっぱり深入りしてしまうので、それでいろんなものを彫っているうちに今度はこの先生のところに直に習いに行って、仏像彫刻をするようになったんです。

A: I understand.
T: I even exhibited a statue at an amateur exhibition in Ōno and received the mayor’s award.

　ANF　ああ、なるほど。
　滝沢　私自身もね仏様を掘る、そういうことをしたりしてて、それで大野市の趣味展に出したらということで出だしたんですよ。そうしたら彫刻部門で大野市の市長賞です。そのときも習いながらやっていたんです。

A: You didn’t present a Yukinko?
Takizawa: No, it was a craft item for sale. I only made Yukinko for myself.

　ANF　その時はゆきんこは出されず？
　滝沢　これは民芸品ですから。雪人形は販売用ですから。私はこれを自分用に作ってる。
A: But didn’t your friends or relatives want some?
Takizawa: As a buddisht monk, I gave three or four to my parishioners, but I never sold them. Actually, the price depends a lot on the material. Zelkova is quite expensive and hard to work with. For more common items, we used ginkgo or magnolia, which are softer. Here you can see the chisel marks, which give a higher-end look. For the cheaper models, you simply cut and plane them.

　ANF　なるほどね。それでもご友人であったり周りの方は欲しいと言われたんじゃないですか？
　滝沢　あの、私お寺の住職ですので檀家の人が欲しいっていうのを作ってあげるって。 3、4体あげたこともありますけど、販売はしません。で、これ作品的に言うとこれらは非常に高くなります。何かっていうと、素材が高いです。欅が高いです。
一般的な民具っていうと銀杏の木ぐらいになります。銀杏とかホウノキとか。で、欅そのものは硬いから加工に手間がかかる。銀杏とかそういったものは柔らかい木ですので加工が簡単ができます。これ見ていただくとわかるように、ノミ跡がついてます。もっと安いやつになると、スポンと切って、鉋がけだけでもできるようになるんです。

A: So there were cheaper Yukinko too?
T: Yes, you could make them. You could even use templates to cut them quickly. But these are carved by hand, with visible chisel marks, which makes them more precious. If you want to make them for everyone, you’d have to change the material and simplify the design.
(Showing the one by Hōun with a rounded back) That’s the realistic model, with the traditional hat. The hat folds out to be worn.

　ANF　じゃあ、ゆきんこでも安いものもあったんですか?
　滝沢　できるんです。で、場合によっては型紙を取って上からスポッと切るんです。それでここに筋を入れればいけます。ノコギリの跡が出ますから、鉋かけてもいける。で、これは手彫りですからノミ跡がつきます。だからこれらも風合いとしては高級なものになるんですね。一般的に安く皆に配るということになると、素材を変えるのと、デザインをもっとまっすぐな形だったら安くできます。
（背面がカーブしている芳雲作の雪人形）これはリアルな方です。リアルというのは、本当の御座帽子。この御座帽子は後ろにつながっているんですよ。御座は折りたたむんです。こうなってる部分を開いて被るわけですから。

A: The wider back, was that because it was harder to make?
T: No, I just prefer this style, for the volume. I think it gives more presence.
[Pointing to the front] Here, this is the brim of the hat. If you simplify, you omit this detail, but just adding a small ridge already gives it character.

　ANF　背面を太めにしたのは難しかったからですか？
　滝沢　いや、私はこちらの方が好きだから好きだからやって入るんです。というのボリューム感。この線よりもボリューム感のあった方が存在感としてがあるなっていう、そういう思いです。これらは（芳雲、芳名作）非常にリアルな感じに持ってきています。

A: I see.
T: And these are the shoes. They are large, like those of the traditional costume.

　ANF　確かにね。本当に（実際の御座と）そっくりですね。
　滝沢　（雪人形正面の重なり）これは御座帽子の縁です。縁の生地ですね。
　ANF　これが簡略化するとデザインから無くなるんですね。
　滝沢　生地の段をちょっとつけるだけで見栄えがしますから。で、これは何かというと靴です。この靴。
A: So the collar or other details are up to the artist?
T: [Shows a photo] These are straw sandals. And here, the overlapping folds of the garment – the master loved this detail. Some models have it, others don’t. Adding it takes more time and therefore costs more. For me, it’s just one more cut, but still an extra step. Hōun’s pieces are really works of art.

　ANF　じゃあ、襟をつけたりつけなかったりというのも、もう本人の判断で、デザインなんですね。
　滝沢　（写真を見せる）これね、藁履。それからここの御座の掛け合わせ。この掛け合わせっていうのは、先生も掛け合わせをよくするんで。（他のゆきんこ）ここは掛け合わせがありませんね。ここはちょっとありますで、（掛け合わせがないもの）これは簡単にできます。（掛け合わせがあるもの）こっちは非常に時間がかかります。私の場合はちょっと切り込みを入れるだけですから一回で済みます。工程が一つ増える。工程が増えるということは人件費がかかるということです。（芳雲作）こっちは特に作品っていう感じです。

A: There’s no one making them in town anymore, right? But it has become a symbol of sort for Ōno, hasn’t it? You see them in front of the station, for example.
T: After all this time, there’s hardly anyone left in town involved with it. Hōun-san and Mr. Kaneko sold them as a folk craft, and I did it only for my own enjoyment, really. And as for whether this is a symbol of Ōno? Not really. If anything, it was more a means of livelihood for these two gentlemen.

　ANF　市内ではもう作っているところは無いですよね？でも今や大野市のシンボル的なものになってますよね。水の精や駅前にもありますし。でも実際、大野市のイメージキャラクターというわけでもないので。
　滝沢　今となっては、趣味の世界かもしれない。これだけ年月が経っていると、市内にこれに関わった人がいない。芳雲は民芸品として売ってるわけですから、私らは自分で好きでやっている程度でしょう。それにこれが大野のシンボルかっていうとそうでもないし。どちらかといえばこれはこのお二人が生活の糧にしてたものであるというか。

A: Thank you very much, that was very enlightening.
T: I support you! You have to give the face a childlike, slightly squashed look. All Yukinko have a child’s face.
Yamada: The dolls are called dō (child). That’s what sells. A face that is too perfect doesn’t sell. It needs a smile that makes people happy.
T: The body should be slightly shortened, the feet big – this makes it look childlike. If you give it an adult face, it won’t sell.

　ANF　ありがとうございます。勉強になりました。
　滝沢　応援していますよ。顔はくしゃっと潰れた子供顔にすること。雪人形は全部童顔なんですよ。
　山田　人形って童て言うでしょう。童っていうのが売れます。あんまり整った顔は売れないんです。笑みが浮かぶ。見た人が喜ぶ。
　滝沢　全体的には、寸足らずで縮める。足を大きくして、子供っぽく見せる。これを大人の顔にすると売れないんですよ。
